Sapele ASAPCAW
I was in a timberyard in Cork looking for some utile when
I came across some large and beautifully quartersawn sapele
boards. Sapele is a dark and very dense African mahogany
that makes great acoustic guitars so I bought all that I
could and took it back to the workshop. Although the
moisture meter showed this wood to be dry I did what I
always do when I bring wood home and left it to aclimatise
to the workshop humidity for almost a year before cutting
some back and sides. This is the first example of a sapele
guitar from those boards. I matched the mahogany with a fine
sitka top and made the neck from sapele and quartersawn
maple. The bindings are flamed maple, the headstock and
bridge Rio rosewood and I used some mother of pearl for the
rosette. This was a stock guitar but it didn't stay 'in
stock' for very long!
