Mike's SC6 Fretless . Mike had a very clear idea of what he wanted and this is it. Looks like a regular SC6 fretless but this one has a headstock and a 36" scale. Mike tunes to low A and the extra long scale allows for this. Actually he told me that he has also tuned it to low G(!) using an Ampeg 2x15, 2x10 cab and it worked this low too. The wood for the face and back is a stunning piece of Rio rosewood that I was keeping in the wood store for a special project and this is it. The meat in the sandwich is a core of Irish sycamore. The pickup covers and headstock veneer are also made from the same piece of Rio. The contrast of the sapwood and heartwood is quite something. The neck is a lamination of flamed and hard maples with sapele and utile strips, contains 6 pieces of carbon fibre and the trussrod. A thick ebony fingerboard with maple marks along with a low action makes the bass growl. In addition to the magnetic pickups threre are also RMC piezo saddles in the Hipshot bridge. Circuitry is rather more complex than the few controls on the front would have you believe. In the cavity, along with the RMC preamp for the piezo, sits a Schack three band EQ which has 4 dil switches per band making it very, very versatile. The boost and cut can be adjusted using a small screwdriver through the holes in the ebony backplate. Mike tells me that he actually uses the bass without EQ, just adding a little compression.
Worth another picture I think.
